Seven Garden State Towns Shine on National Wealth and Safety List

Seven New Jersey communities have been recognized among the 50 safest and richest cities to live in across the United States for 2025, highlighting the Garden State’s strong mix of affluence, security, and quality of life.

The annual ranking, compiled by personal finance site GOBankingRates, analyzed U.S. Census data and other indicators such as average home value, cost of living, and crime rates. This year’s list was expanded to 50 cities, with Western Springs, Illinois taking the top spot for the second year in a row.

For New Jersey, the recognition is significant, with towns across North and Central Jersey making the cut, from Bergen County to Middlesex County.

At number 11, Ridgewood in Bergen County leads the state’s entries. With a household mean income of nearly $289,000, an average home value topping $1.1 million, and low crime rates, Ridgewood has established itself as a premier community.

Close behind at number 13 is Westfield in Union County, boasting an even higher mean household income of $297,367 and property values averaging $1.26 million. Its crime rate remains among the lowest, further cementing its appeal for families seeking both prosperity and safety.

Madison in Morris County comes in at 21, with strong income levels and a lower cost of living compared to some of its peers, while Haddonfield in Camden County follows at 22, making it one of the highest-ranked South Jersey towns.

At number 23 is Glen Ridge in Essex County, where mean household income surpasses $300,000 and property values remain robust. Summit in Union County secures the 31st spot, standing out with the highest mean income among New Jersey’s entries at over $304,000. Rounding out the list is Metuchen in Middlesex County at number 50, noted for its balance of affordability and relative safety compared to larger nearby markets.

In total, five of New Jersey’s seven entries were repeat performers from last year’s ranking, showing consistent recognition for the state’s towns as safe and wealthy places to live. Chatham, which had previously earned a spot, did not make the 2025 list.

The recognition comes as New Jersey continues to grapple with one of the most competitive housing markets in the country. Towns like Ridgewood, Summit, and Westfield routinely see demand outstrip supply, driving home values higher. Yet the combination of high household incomes and strong community safety helps these towns remain attractive despite the rising costs.

For residents, the acknowledgment serves as validation of long-standing efforts to invest in schools, public safety, and community life. For newcomers, it may be one more reason to consider settling in the Garden State.

With seven towns included, New Jersey secured one of the strongest showings of any state, reinforcing its reputation as home to some of the most desirable suburban communities in the nation.
