Gas Main Break Causes Street to Bulge in Secaucus

SECAUCUS, New Jersey (WABC) – Crews in Secaucus are working to repair a gas main break that occurred on Monday, with repairs expected to continue late into the night.

Officials reported that around 7:30 a.m., the street began bulging near Secaucus Road and Henry Street, an industrial area surrounded by businesses.

A strong smell of gas filled the area as it was vented through open manholes. Authorities confirmed that a 16-inch gas main had ruptured, causing the road to buckle. Repair crews are working carefully to fix the issue.

As of 10 a.m., crews estimated that repairs could take up to 16 hours. Residents in the area will likely be without gas service until the main is fully restored.

Authorities have urged drivers to avoid the area. Police are enforcing emergency road closures at County Avenue to Secaucus Road. Additionally, Secaucus Road from Henry Street to County Avenue has been closed.

PSE&G reported that there were no evacuations and no injuries associated with the incident.
